Exploring the Baritone Dulcimer
Discover the warm, resonant voice of the baritone dulcimer while building confidence across the instrument. Using AEA tuning as our home base, we’ll get oriented with note placement on the fretboard and work with A, D, and E major scales to develop greater familiarity, accuracy, and freedom of movement.
We’ll explore techniques suited to the baritone’s heavier strings, including flatpicking, strumming, and fingerpicking, with special attention to producing a clear, balanced tone. We’ll also map chord shapes and relationships across the fretboard, then put everything into practice with repertoire that showcases the instrument’s deep, rich sound.
Along the way, we’ll discuss how to choose and arrange songs that truly benefit from the baritone’s lower range, helping you make the most of its distinctive musical character.
