DJ'S CLASSES:
Rhythm & Strum Fun Level 1 (Sat #3)
A strong & even strum is useful and satisfying when playing dulcimer. Basic rhythms will be presented and explored using standard strum patterns. Fun rhythm games will be part of the hour’s play!
“Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still” (Baritone) Level 4 (Sat #4)
This may be a Scottish lament (ca 1864) but has become an American folk ballad favorite. Frank and Anne Warner collected it from singers of the Outer Banks, NC, in 1951, yet this version is taken from Elizabeth LaPrelle (2011). The melody and lyrics are unforgettable, with a Victorian sensibility. You’ll learn both a chord/melody arrangement and an accompanying chord progression for both AEA & DAD tunings. AEA tuning, 1+ fret required
“Let My People Go” Across the Strings Level 2 (Sat #5)
Moving from melody/drone style to cross-string technique, you’ll work through this gospel tune, gaining facility on all 3 strings and playing what you want, when you want it. There will be flat-picking exercises, scales, playing all, one, or 2 strings, and pulls (ornaments) to add. DAC tuning
“Ashokan Farewell” Chord/Melody & Back-up Level 3 (Sat #7)
Known as the theme for Ken Burns’ “Civil War”, this popular waltz was written by Jay Ungar in 1984. Besides learning a chord melody arrangement, you’ll discover how to overlay a three-quarter time strum – a skill that can serve for future waltz tunes. To top it all off, you’ll get the back-up part to share with a partner.
