Christmas on the Middle String
It’s a good time to get some holiday tunes under your fingers! These arrangements of “The Cherry Tree Carol” and “Good King Wenceslas” take the melody over to the middle string while the others drone: a switch-up from melody-string only playing with the same strumming style. Song lyrics and harmony parts will be included, so you’ll be ready to share with family & friends.
Friday, 9/29, Session 6, Level 2
Fretboard Power: Standard DAD Edition
Learning the notes available on your instrument – where they are, how scales are devised, and how chords are built – gives you So. Much. Power! Working with the (mostly) diatonic standard fretboard in DAD, you'll get the information you need, with resources to refer to as learning tools. More advanced musicians will gain a solid review and be able to apply these principles to chord shapes on the standard dulcimer.
Saturday, 9/30, Session 4, Level 3
A Pair of English Country Dances, Old & New, for Baritone English country dance tradition continues, world-wide, with both traditional tunes and contemporary compositions. “Parson’s Farewell,” a traditional tune, is played at a bouncy but moderate tempo with lots of slides, pulls, & hammers to keep the melody moving. “Pond Full of Stars,” written by fiddler Jon Berger in 2010, glides at a more leisurely tempo, with most of the melody on the middle string. Saturday, 9/30, Session 5, Level 3
“Southwind”, an Exercise in Fingerpicking
No picks needed when you use your fingers to do the plucking! Exercises to gain facility with picking individual strings, a variety of picking patterns, and methods for streamlining the process are introduced. After a bit of practice the techniques are applied to this beautiful and familiar fiddle tune.
